Bishop by Candace Nola

"Caught between an ancient evil and a man with nothing to lose, a young girl's fate hangs in the balance."

Erin Rogers and her daughter Casey have been missing in the Alaskan wilderness for five days. Troy Spencer is determined to find his sister and niece at any cost. Once there, a local tells Troy about a loner, Bishop, a man shrouded in secrets, who may be his only hope.

As Troy sets out to find the mysterious Bishop, Casey is lost in the woods, alone and frightened, seeking help for her gravely injured mother. But she is not alone, something ancient stalks these forested trails, something evil that hungers for fresh blood.

The trio soon finds themselves caught in a struggle against time as an ancient rivalry is renewed.

CURATOR'S NOTE

An atmospheric thriller set in the Alaskan wilderness that fuses the supernatural and folkloric with nail-biting suspense, as Casey and her gravely injured mother fight to survive against the elements — and against an evil that hungers. – Mike Allen

Prologue

December 15, 1990

Elliott Tanner sat in the back seat of the old Jeep, holding a book and watching the snowflakes blur past the windows. Night had fallen quickly as his family traveled along the narrow road. The vast expanse of the forest stretched along both sides, further than anyone could see. His parents talked quietly in the front seat, over the murmur of the radio. They were going to visit his grandmother in the village by the coast. Elliott thought they had been driving forever, but his mom said that it was just the early night that made the journey seem so long.

He caught a flash of movement outside the car and turned his head quickly to the other side to see what it was, but it was gone. As he turned back to his book, the Jeep jerked violently to the left and his mother screamed as it fishtailed wildly out of control on the snow-covered road. Elliott cried as he saw what stood before them. His tears did not have time to drip into his knitted scarf as the car slid down the bank and rolled. He heard his parents screaming as the Jeep pitched over the ravine and then everything went black.

"Breaking News-Today in Northern Alaska, the gruesome remains of a young couple were discovered, over three miles from where their vehicle was found. Police say that the young family hit a patch of ice, sending their vehicle crashing into the ravine below. Police speculate that a pack of wild animals happened across the tragic scene, ravaging the bodies before they could be found. More details to follow after the coroner's report. They were traveling with their son, four-year-old Elliott Tanner, who has not yet been found."
